David Owens is a WSWSNE member from the Boston area. His Welsh Folk Song Pastiche (ffidilio yng Nghymru) for solo violin will be performed by Cindy Cummings in her Symphony Pro Musica Facebook concert.
Cindy Cummings is one of the region’s most sought-after freelance violinists and regularly performs with The Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, Symphony Pro Musica, and other top orchestras.
David Owens, of Welsh descent, made a concert arrangement of a string of Welsh tunes, including Clochau Aberteifi, Suo Gân, Ar Hyd y Nos, Sospan Fach . . . and gave them a virtuoso violin treatment. Cynthia had a mentor years ago, a Welshman from Lisfane , and has retained an interest in Celtic culture and things. After a conversation he had with her several years back, she suggested he write something for her. She was keen about the notion of something folkish and Celtic, so he came up with this little potboiler show-off piece. Familiar tunes are there, such as Llwyn Onn; but there are more obscure ones, like Nyth y Gwcw.
Tune in to the Symphony Pro Musica Facebook mini-concert series, SPM@Home, at 7:30 pm EST Friday, June 5, at https://www.facebook.com/symphonypromusica/live,
