Our annual Christmas Holiday Luncheon will be held Saturday, Dec 1, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. - at the historic Storrowton Tavern, West Springfield, MA on the grounds of the BigE (Eastern States Exposition). We had such a good time there last year, we just had to do it again. See driving directions (with GPS caution) below.
11:00 a.m. Social Hour meet old friends and new: cash bar with hors d’oeuvres of cheese, crackers and crudités.
12:00 noon Festive Luncheon, complete with the popping of British Christmas crackers! (Thanks to members Shirley & Danny Gilmartin for this annual treat.)
Entertainment follows the luncheon:
Memories of Welsh Christmas Past - Long past? (as Scrooge asked); No, your past (as the spirit replied). We will share the memories of those attending who grew up in Wales or whose families of Welsh descent continued to include old traditions as part of their celebration of Christmas, Winter Solstice, the New Year.
What do YOU remember? Gifts? (the “useful” and the “useless” as Dylan Thomas said in “A Child’s Christmas in Wales”. Decorations?, Special Food and Drink?, Music/Songs?, Charoling?, Games?, Story-telling? Relatives?, Church?, Winter Walks, Sleigh Rides, Skating?
Welsh Music and Song led by member Straford Wild, including traditional “Plygain” carols from the 13th century, pre-dawn, candle-lit Welsh Christmas morning services, which are unlike the ones we know today. Plus more familiar songs of the season and others.
Post-Event Bonus: Yuletide at Storrowton Village from 2 - 4 PM, please enjoy a complimentary visit to Storrowton Village’s annual winter holiday festival which features their 18th & 19th century seasonally decorated buildings. The Village is bursting with holiday delights such as musical performances, storytelling, old-fashioned craft demonstrations, gift shop, and sweet shop.
